A selection of pictures taken in Stavanger on 1st. October 2003.

It's now 10 months since bus services in Nord Jæren came under the control of Rogaland Kollektivtrafikk (Kolumbus). After a certain amount of confusion at the outset of the new services, the travelling public seem to have adjusted to the new routes. Complaints about services reported in the media seem to have been reduced.

On the other hand, things have not gone so smoothly between Kolumbus and Connex, one of the two contractors operating buses for Kolumbus. In order to get services operating as they should, Connex have had to set in 20% more resources than Kolumbus had specified in their tender invitation. Connex have demanded compensation for the extra costs this had involved, failing that, they have threatened to withdraw the additional buses. Kolumbus have maintained that the extra costs are Connex's responsibility.

The picture selection below reflects the buses typically seen on Kolumbus services in Stavanger.

RH60552 is one of Connex's Polish built Scania L94's with bodywork also built by Scania in 1998. It is seen here in Haakon VIIs gate. The cathedral behind the bus has an almost ghostly appearance! Click for a larger picture

Click for a larger picture After the introduction of the new bus services more buses were routed via Ny Olavskleiva and Løkkeveien, an area with 4 large hotels. Two of them can be seen in the picture here, the Clarion on the left, and the Radisson SAS Royal behind the tree. The bus in the picture is Connex's UA23332, a Scania L94UB with Vest V25LE (build no. 2869) 15 metre bus bodywork. This 3-axle bus was new in 2002. Route 2B starts at Vardeneset, one of Stavanger's northern suburbs, and goes to Sandnes via Stavanger city centre. It is seen here in Ny Olavskleiva approaching the city centre.

Just a bit further down the road was Connex's SR71163, a Volvo B10B with Arna (build no. 4280) bus bodywork. Click for a larger picture

Click for a larger picture The no. 3 is now Nettbuss Vest's only stage bus service into Stavanger. It runs between Sandnes and Viste Hageby (in Randaberg kommune) via Stavanger city centre. Seen here near the cathederal is RH79203, a Mercedes-Benz O 530 with Citaro bus bodywork built by EvoBus in Ulm. The bus was new in 2000.

Seen in Kongsgata is UA23336, another of Connex's 15 metre Scanias. Like the one pictured near the top of the page it is a Scania L94UB with Vest V25LE bodywork (build no. 2885) new in 2002. As well as steering with the front wheels, the rear-most wheels also steer, thus reducing the turning circle and wear due to tyre scrub. Click for a larger picture

Click for a larger picture Still in Kongsgata, is a rear view of Connex's DJ19994, a Mercedes-Benz O 405 N, new in 1997. Most buses operating services for Kolumbus now carry an advertisement covering the back of the bus.

Just about to turn into Klubbgata is Connex's SR87861, a Volvo B10BLE with Arna 3-door bus body (build no. 4433). Click for a larger picture

Click for a larger picture Like Nettbuss Vest, Connex owns a number of Arna bodied DAF SB220's. Due to their age, they were not assigned to Kolumbus services, so both Nettbuss and Connex SB220's have retained their original liveries. They are generally used on school services and other similar duties, although occasionally they do get pressed into Kolumbus service like this one, Connex's SR46471, seen in Klubbgata.
